George Terrell Mayes' Obituary
George Terrell Mayes passed on to his next adventure on November 22, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. George was born on May 10, 1933 in Kilgore, TX during the Oil Boom to James Thomas Mayes and Florence Anna Key Mayes. He worked his way through the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a BS in Architectural Engineering 1955. He was a proud member of the Tejas Club at UT. He then attended the University of Illinois, where he received an MS in Civil Engineering and a PhD in Structural Engineering. In Illinois, he met and married his wife of 55 years Mariann Mayes. He practiced structural engineering in the Dallas area for 27 years and then was Vice President of operations for a millwork company in Jacksonville, Texas, for 17 years. George was keenly interested in the stock market and enjoyed studying the intricacies of how the market behaved. He became an avid golfer later in life and loved to go out and chip and put with his son John. He was also a devoted UT Longhorn, sharing with pride his experiences at UT. George lived courageously for 4 years with a Left Ventrical Assist Device (LVAD), implanted at the UT Southwestern Medical School. We would like to thank the staff in Heart and Lung and the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital 6 North for the excellent and compassionate care they gave him. George is survived by his wife Mariann Harper Mayes and his two children John (Jennifer) Mayes and Cathy (Robert) Morris. He is also survived by his brother James Hugh Mayes and by 5 beloved grandchildren. Visitation will be on Friday, November 28, 2014, from 6-8pm at Restland Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 9am at in the Chapel at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Road, Dallas, TX. A private interment will be held in Nacogdoches. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75238 The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin (http://www.engr.utexas.edu/giving) or to UT Southwestern Medical School Heart and Lung – Cardiology (http://swmedical.org/makeagift).
