Van McClain and wife, Nancy, of Bartlett, TN, stepdaughter Tamara Cave Peak, of Coldspring, TX, stepson Colby Cave, of Farmers Branch, TX, grandchildren, Jerry Newman, and wife Sally, Kristi Britt and husband Brad, Kelli Newman, Kimberly Auvenshine, and her husband Darrel, Carlin Peak Thrasher, and husband Todd, Blake Peak, 12 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Tomey grew up in East Dallas near the Texas State Fairgrounds attending Woodrow Wilson High School. Following his graduation, at 17, he wanted to enlist to fight during WWII, but he could only do that with his father’s approval. His father did not want him to enlist in the Navy, but he would allow him to enlist in the Coast Guard, which he did in 1944. He went to radio school to learn Morse code and spent the duration of his service in Hawaii and the Marshall Islands decoding messages. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and received the WWII Victory ribbon, American Theater of Operations Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations Ribbon for his service.
After returning from the war, Tomey met and married his first wife Charlcie Van Allen. He married his second wife, a widow, Blanche Ann Cave in 1963. He and Blanche lived in Oak Cliff then moved to Farmers Branch later that year. Tomey and Blanche, and Tomey alone after her death in 2017, lived in that home for 55 years. In 2019, he moved to assisted living when he was no longer able to safely live by himself.
Tomey began and ended his career as a draftsman, designing oil field pressure vessels where he worked for F.W. Glitsch, Wyatt Industries and Trinity Industries. He obtained an Associate’s degree in Arts and Science, studied and passed licensure as a real estate broker, and spent several years as a Registered Investment adviser. He was also on the library board for the City of Farmers Branch, serving on the board and then as chairman. He was a committeeman and counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and an advisor for Junior Achievement.
Tomey was an avid gardener. He spend many years and countless hours preparing the soil, planting and tending onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and okra to name a few. At 91, he finally planted his last crop.
Tomey was also a skilled investor. Over the years, he wisely learned the right (and sometimes wrong) investments for the time, to manage his portfolio based on market conditions and opportunities, the benefits of tax managed investing and the importance of investing and saving for retirement. Because of this, he and Blanche were able to comfortably retire, travel and enjoy life in retirement. He and Blanche traveled both domestically and internationally and spent many summers in Ruidoso, New Mexico celebrating their anniversary.
First and foremost, Tomey was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. In his last few years, we’ve seen the gentleness and appreciation shown to others for the care and support he was given, first in assisted living and then in memory care. He maintained his wonderful sense of humor and never passed up the opportunity joke with us.
Tomey was raised in a Christian home, and continued to be an active member of his church and Sunday school class for the majority of his life. He believed that he was saved by grace and had a deep faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his faith, we know that he is at home and at peace.
