Dave Rieder
George A. Rieder was born in West Caldwell, New Jersey to loving parents George and Johanna Rieder, who had come to America from Germany in the 1920s. He was fortunate to enjoy the love and companionship of his extended family, including the Duppers, the Kurrles and the Niethes—all relatives of his mother who had also come from Germany and lived nearby. They all shared the common goal of working hard to create a meaningful life for themselves and for all who knew them. George was a very athletic young man who played baseball and basketball with neighborhood boys and on teams at school, and also became exceptional at running track. He would later earn a scholarship to run track at the University of Pennsylvania where he competed in multiple events and participated in the famous Penn Relays. George excelled in his studies and became a lifelong learner due to his insatiable curiosity and his pursuit of knowledge in all its forms. He truly loved to learn and to share stories and insights throughout his life. At the University of Pennsylvania, George attended the prestigious Wharton School of Commerce and Finance where his hard work for exceptional professors prepared him for a long and successful business career. In addition to being a scholar-athlete, George was a leader in various Penn organizations including the Friar?s Club, Mask and Wig, Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Class of 1953 student government. He was elected ?Bowl Man? by his senior class based on his achievements and contributions to class life. Through his fraternity, he helped to create special events for needy children and was Chief Counselor at Green Lane Camp for Settlement House boys. Another highlight of his years at Penn was meeting his future wife, Suzanne (Sue) Copeland. They shared many great times with special friends at the Mask and Wig clubhouse, campus events and fraternity/sorority gatherings. They married in 1955 and spent the rest of their lives together. George began his business career with Union Carbide Corporation where he handled responsibilities in the areas of labor relations, employment training, college recruiting, performance appraisal and management development. His work for Union Carbide was interrupted by his service in the United States Army where he was trained as a medic. He cared for patients on the VIP Ward at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. After that, he returned to UC in Niagara Falls, New York where George and Sue welcomed their daughter, Kristen into the world. In 1960, he became Director of Personnel and Public Relations for The Ohio Company, investment bankers in Columbus, Ohio. His activities there encompassed all aspects of personnel management as well as consulting for a variety of client firms. During those years , sons Dan and Dave were born, making the Rieder family complete. George became associated with Indiana National Bank in 1965. His principal duties were first concentrated in the overall management of the personnel function and, in 1975, he also assumed leadership of the Marketing Division. The strategic planning function also came under his management during 1978. During his tenure at INB, he was active in community organizations important to the future of Indianapolis, including education and employment task forces for then-Mayor (later US Senator) Richard Lugar, leadership of Day Nursery Association and Indy 500 event volunteers. He also served as a Deacon at Northminster Presbyterian Church, where he and his wife Sue were members of the Tandem Club and sang in the choir. He also made time to support all three of his children in their varied pursuits in theater and music, sports teams and youth groups. The whole family traveled out East every summer to visit grandparents and then spend two weeks at the beach in Matunuck, Rhode Island?great family memories last a lifetime.
