George Weissman's Obituary
George Weissman, M.D. Died Sunday, June 13, 2010 of natural causes at the age of 91, at his home in Dallas, Texas. Born in New York City, he retired from the Veterans Administration in Manhattan after 30 years as Chief Clinic Cardiologist in storied career of saving and prolonging lives as an internist and cardiologist – his deft skills in reading cardiographs being remarkable. Dr. Weissman graduated from Manhattan’s George Washington High School, New York University and New York University Medical School in 1943. During WWII he served three years in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, where he was appointed Chief of Medical Services – 245 General Hospital, in the Philippines. Dr. Weissman’s zest for life led to extensive travel adventures, particularly in Italy, where his fluent Italian won him entre to many rewarding experiences. He also excelled in 50 years of botany – particularly the art of growing banzai trees, photography; his vast knowledge of opera and classical music brought him constant joy which he shared with others. He played piano. Dr. Weissman, a keen scientific mind, was an avid reader on most subjects; he spoke and read several languages, Italian being his favorite. He loved to fish – particularly for blue fish and stripe bass. A true friend always; he led an exemplary life, filling each day with meaningful accomplishments. Noted for his strong bond with his family and friends – he gave us much and he will be missed even more. Our salutes! Many salutes! George Weissman was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chaim and Miriam Weinberg of Poland and NYC, parents Erwin and Paula Weinberg Weissman of NYC., and brother Morton, of NYC and Boca Raton. He is survived by his friend and financial advisor of many years, Richard Ellison of NYC and Dallas, sister-in-law Eleanor Weissman (Morton), NYC and Boca Raton, niece Iris Weissman Kelsen (Chris), Cincinnati, Michael Weissman (Lisa), Jericho, NY, and their children: Matthew (Melania) and Jennifer Kelsen, and Andrew and Rachel Weissman. Special salutes to Eleanor Nyilas, Frank Lawrence, Joe and Dolly Richino families, of L.I., NY, the extended Ellison families, and his other wonderful friends.
