Gerald Johnson Cowan's Obituary
COWAN, GERALD JOHNSON (JERRY) Chief Warrant Officer, USA Ret., who served during the Korean Conflict and in the Vietnam War, passed away in Garland on Tuesday, September 15, at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Blackford, KY to Homer and Willie Mae Johnson Cowan. He graduated from Clay High School (Clay, KY) in 1952 and later earned his Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Texas at Dallas. His service to his country began in 1954, and included 15 years in the Air Force and five years in the Army where he received his commission while in Vietnam. After serving his country, he worked at various electronics firms, including E-Systems, Garland. After retiring from E-Systems, he formed his own company, COWCO Enterprises. He was a very active member of the Disabled American Veterans, serving in various offices for his Chapter, District, and State. He had the honor of becoming Department of Texas Commander (2004-2005) and serving on the National Executive Committee (2006-2008). He was also active in the Greater Dallas Veterans Council, and was President for two years. His lifelong devotion to God led him to service as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Garland. He was also a member of the Polar Star #154 Masonic Lodge. Jerry loved his family and friends, and never seemed to meet a stranger. When greeting someone, they were sure to get a hardy handshake or a big hug. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am at Restland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Restland Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
