Gertha Faye Monroe's Obituary
Monroe, Gertha Faye Collier ~ Born in Southmayd, Texas on September 19, 1919, Gertha went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2011. Gertha was the third of eight children and was a successful business woman and loving wife. She had a long career with Southwest Securities, but her passion was children. She loved taking care of babies and worked in the mother’s day out program of Ridgecrest Baptist Church for many years. Gertha was widowed in 1987, but met and married widower Harold Monroe in 1991. She has been embraced by the Monroe family as a mother and grandmother ever since. Harold and Gertha were deeply in love and remained side by side in the same nursing center and room until Harold passed earlier this year. Gertha’s greatest wish was to live just “one day longer” to care for her Alzheimer’s stricken husband. They died just 5 weeks apart. Gertha is preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Lizzie Collier, husband Harold, and five brothers and sisters. She is survived by stepdaughter Melody and husband Raylan; stepson Graham and wife Melissa; grandchildren Jackson and Alexander; sister Guyrene; brother Weldon; best friend Roberta and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Gertha is deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be held at Restland Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 pm. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 12:30 at Restland’s Wildwood Chapel in Dallas. A graveside service will follow in Heath, TX. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
