Gertrude K. Bauer's Obituary
Gertrude Maria Franceska Kammerer Bauer (‘Trudy’, ‘Gammi’) was born to Hugo and Maria Kammerer in Germany on November 17, 1910 and died peacefully on July 13, 2008. Mrs. Bauer was a woman of as many strengths as she had names. She lived through WWI in Germany, moving to the Black Forest where food was easier to obtain. Later moving with her father to the US in 1926, she lived through the Great Depression. She married Tony Bauer on July 21, 1934, nursed him through a debilitating illness for some years then and again in his ’90’s. They moved to Texas in 1943, living through another world war. The Bauers had 69 years together, renewing their commitment at breakfast every year on their anniversary until his death in 2004 at age 94. They had a daughter they adored, Norma (‘Toni’) Bauer Clay in 1939 who died suddenly in 1981. Mrs. Bauer was a devout Lutheran, an avid reader and correspondent and geneologist. An intuitive cook of innumerable family meals and a constant baker of German specialties, she loved chocolate cake most of all. Mrs. Bauer is survived by her loving granddaughter, Barbara Clay, husband Ken Bernstein, and joys of her life, great grandchildren Noah and Rachel Bernstein and bonus daughter Dr. Janet Skinner. Her beloved brother Hugo Kammerer predeceased her in January, 2008. She is survived by sister in law Lorraine, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and special caretakers Faye Hall, DuShonne Hall and Jennie King. She is also survived by family in Germany, the Simeon, Kammerer, Hoenniger, and Moser-Fendel families. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lakehill Preparatory 2720 Hillside Dr., Dallas 75214 designated for the Alice and Erle Nye Family Science Center would be greatly appreciated.
