Gertrude Mae Hooten Winberg's Obituary
She was born in Weldon, NC on September 4, 1917 to Helen Loraine Hooten and Roland Walter Hooten Sr. and was the oldest of six children, which included two brothers and three sisters. Gertrude (who went by “Gertie” and later “Trudy”) was the last one to meet her maker. She died on June 29, 2016 in Granbury, TX with her three children at her side. She was 98 years and 10 months old. Trudy’s mother passed away when Trudy was 14 years old and when she was 16 years old she moved to her aunt’s home to finish her high school days. After finishing high school she moved to Norfolk, VA. It was there where she met Lawrence Wesley Winberg Sr. (“Buckle”) and on January 4, 1942 they were married. She was 25 years old. Buckle and Trudy had three children, Helen Pamela and son-in-law Don Wignall, Lawrence Wesley Jr. “Larry” and daughter-in-law Daphne, and Linda Gail and son-in-law Bill Hohner. They were blessed with five grandchildren, Robin Lyn and grandson-in-Iaw Glen Devenish, Holly Kristin and grandson-in-Iaw Jeff Stephens, Michael Rolan Giarrusso and granddaughter-in-Iaw Trisha, April Allen and grandson-in-Iaw Brian Rentzsch, and Matthew Gayle Wignall and granddaughter-in-Iaw Becca. They were also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren, Ian Devenish, Colton and Maci Giarrusso, Chris, Danny, Ethan, and Finn Rentzsch, and Jaycie, Nathan, and Elliette Wignall. Buckle and Trudy were married for 57 years when Buckle died on April 15, 1999. Trudy was a wonderful mother and grandmother; she loved her family with all her heart. Being a Christian, she was the “rock” of the family. In the early days she was always on call to help in any way she could. After her children were married, she wondered out loud when she would have grandchildren, and low and behold within 3 1/2 months in 1969 she had 3 grandchildren (Robin, Holly, and Mike). Then 5 years later she had 1 more (April), and then 2 years later she had her last grandchild (Matt). The grandchildren enjoyed going out to the farm to stay with Meme and Pop, swing on the “swinging tree”, and having fun on the farm and going on trips with Meme and Pop in the camper. Trudy was a true believer of our Lord and to paraphrase Walter Brueggemann from the book “Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth”. Services will be held Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 10:00AM in the Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
