Gilbert A. Hernandez's Obituary
Gilbert A. Hernandez, ChFC, AEP, CLU, LUTCF, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2011 at the age of 78. He was born July 11, 1933 in Dallas TX, to Thomas and Juanita Hernandez. Gilbert was the second of three children. Gilbert married Catalina (Cata) Esparza in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on October 11, 1956. He will be remembered by his five children, Isis & Roland Vasquez, Kelvia Hernandez, Gilda & Earl McKoon, Efrem & Ana Hernandez, and Rhoan & Cathy Hernandez, his nine grandchildren, Nicolette, Mary Elizabeth, Earl, Shea, Rhesa, Nick, Ben, Eleni, and Noa and his great grandson Emerson, as well as by his younger sister Gina & Carlos Gonzales. He is preceded in death by his older brother Nick V. Hernandez. Since 1957, Gilbert was an active member of Agape Memorial United Methodist Church (formerly Mary King UMC and Latin America UMC). He actively shared his faith in words and actions. Gilbert made friends easily and cherished each of his many friendships. He was a mentor to many, both professionally and spiritually. Gilbert served as the third chairman of the board for The Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (Dallas Mexican Chamber of Commerce) in 1973-1974 and was an avid supporter of their scholarship program. Throughout his lifetime he served on the boards for Dallas County Community College, Dallas Foundation, The United Way of Greater Dallas, Volunteer Nurses Association, Hope Cottage, El Concilio, East Dallas Cooperative Parish, Dallas East National Bank, and First Texas Bank. He was also a member of The American Association for LTCI and Easy Transition for Desegregation. Additionally he was a 32nd degree Mason and an Army veteran of the Korean War. As a financial advisor and mentor his goal was to help those in need of financial guidance understand personal financial strategies. He authored “Improving Your Cash Flow” in 2009 to advocate education and financial literacy in his community. He will be greatly missed. Visitation will Monday August 8, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at Restland Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Agape Memorial United Methodist Church, 5111 Capitol Avenue in Dallas, TX 75206.
