Gladys Vanous Bates' Obituary
Gladys Vanous Bates passed away on 12 August 2021. She was born 11 February 1920 on a farm near the small town of Otto, Texas, to Alice Ayres and Joseph Vanous. The family moved to Mart, Texas in 1924 and settled on a farm South of town. She attended Mart High School and graduated in 1938. After working in Mart, and later in Waco, Texas, she moved to Dallas to attend Draughn's Business College. From there she went to work for Prudential Insurance Company in the mortgage loan department where she worked for over ten years.
She attended Munger Place Methodist Church and became active in the young peoples group. She met U. Daniel "Dan" Bates and they began dating and were later married 10 May 1952.
After her husband's retirement from the City of Dallas Water Department in 1978, she and Dan moved back to Mart, Texas where they remained until 2003 when they moved into the C. C. Young retirement facility in Dallas, Texas. She continued living at C. C. Young after the death of her husband, Dan in 2004, until her death in 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alice Various, sisters Josephine "Josie" Vanous, Edna Marie Jones, Lorena "Mickey" Goodman, and brother, Joe Connally Vanous; by her husband of 52 years, Dan Bates, and a un-named baby son who was born prematurely and lived only a few hours.
She is survived by her son, Danny Charles Bates of Dallas, and daughter and son-in-law, Martha Jane and Steve Bell of Arlington, sister-in-law Eileen Various of Mart as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends
She was active in the UMW associations at both First United Methodist Church in Mart, Texas and at Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas. An avid crossword puzzle solver, she enjoyed reading, sewing and genealogical research, looking into the backgrounds and history of both the Various and Bates families.
A celebration of Gladys's life will be held at 2 PM on 28 August 2021 in the Sanctuary of Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church (6445 East Lovers Lane, Dallas, TX 75214).
