Gladys Bernice Dorsey's Obituary
DORSEY,GLADYS BERNICE DOWNEY 93, was born on January 16, 1921 in Bromide, OK, and peacefully went to Heaven in the early-morning hours of June 24, 2014. She leaves behind the people that she loved so well: daughters, Katherine and Carolyn Walters; her precious grandchildren: Laura and Cody Walters and his wife Jennifer; and great-granddaughter, Allison. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, John Wesley Dorsey on January 7, 2014. Gladys grew up in Oklahoma but moved to Houston during high school. She attended high school at San Jacinto and graduated from Sidney Lanier. While at Lanier, she danced on the Purple Pup drill team. She attended the University of Texas and was a devoted Longhorn fan, going to the OU-Texas games every year from 1948-2005. She married John Wesley Dorsey on December 2, 1948 whom she had known in high school. They started a family in 1950 when daughter Katherine was born and added a second daughter, Carolyn, in 1953. She loved to play bridge, participate in her sewing and book clubs, and swing dance. She was a long-time secretary in the counseling office at Thomas Jefferson High School. Gladys loved her family and devoted her life to making everyone feel special. On her children’s birthdays, she had wonderful at-home parties and decorated the entire house like a Hawaiian luau, sock hop, or Barbie Doll Land. She loved to cook, to decorate her dinner table, and to welcome everyone into her home with open arms. Gladys was the epitome of grace and elegance and had the kindest heart towards everyone. She was a role model to all as an example of a Christian wife and mother, giving unconditional love and support. She and John were members of Lover’s Lane United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Gladys’s amazing strength, courage, and love made her cherished by all who knew her. The family wants to thank Odyssey Hospice and Pathways for their love and compassion over the last several years. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Friday, June 27, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Restland Wildwood Chapel.
