Gladys Elizabeth George's Obituary
Born Gladys Elizabeth Nelson on August 25, 1914, she passed away on December 29, 2014 in Garland, Texas at the age of 100. She became known to the family and many others as “Momoo”. The daughter of a schoolteacher and dry goods business owner – and sister to younger brother Bill – she was born and raised in McKinney, TX. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she studied to become a teacher and received a certificate from North Texas Teacher’s College. This would be the start of a career that spanned 36 years and brought her much acclaim from school staff and students. At the age of 21 she married Pat Harrison, and followed him to Tampa, Florida – receiving her teaching degree from Tampa University. After her first husband passed, Momoo came back to Dallas to teach. She then met and married Thomas Dunlap in 1946. They did not believe they could have children; but at the age of 32, Momoo gave birth to the first grandchild on either side. The baby was named Cynthia – and when she was only nine months old, Thomas passed. When Cindy was a teenager, Momoo met Malcolm Waldo George in 1961, while he was the Sunday school superintendent for adults at Gaston Avenue Baptist Church. They asked his architect son from a previous marriage to design a retirement house. It was completed in 1979 and they moved into their treasured Holly Lake residence. “Waldo” passed in 1988.Momoo survived three husbands, and she credited her strength in life to good health and strong faith. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia and her husband Abbas; grandchildren, Aimee Lehman, Aaron Kaka, and Melanie Stone and four great grandchildren – Emma, Evan, Aria, and Lila. A graveside service for Gladys was held on January 2, 2015 at Restland Memorial Park.
