24 yrs have passed since I was a student at Berkner High School. I thought it would be easy to express my love and sincere admiration to a woman who I consider responsible for teaching me what it meant to 'own a piece musically.' Yet my efforts are hampered by tears and heartbreak. I had the pleasure of being part of the JV and Varsity choirs while attending Berkner under Mrs. Casey's direction. I am proud to say I was one of her students during the early years of her 19 yr tenure at BHS. Early on it was apparent she loved music and it was her intent to plant and nurture that love in each of us. She affectionately gave me the nickname 'EP' for Ebony Princess. When I asked her, 'Why?' she simply responded, 'Because when you walk into a room, Honey, you own it with you presence!'. 'Now, I am going to teach you to own it vocally!' She did. Everything I ever learned about vocal performance I owe to Glenda and to Jim. Every U.I.L Superior rating I earned as a soloist and as a choir member was due to her methodical and compassionate commitment to importance of expressing the 'story' of each song and drawn my listener (judges) in to my piece. I studied privately with Jim. He and Glenda were truly on one accord; his methods echoed hers and vice versa. I spent most of Monday and Tuesday crying. Two teachers who I owe so very much are gone now. Before the 'Teamwork' 'Excellence' 'Commitment' poster series became popular in corporate America, their meaning was being taught and lived by the students of Glenda J. Casey. It has been said, 'Real education should educate us out of self into something far finer; into selflessness which links us with all humanity.' – Astor. For her students that link was music. Mrs. Casey, you taught me to sing in every aspect of my life. Somehow 'Thank you' just doesn't suffice. In the end Cancer did not take you. It was simply the means of which you were delivered to our Lord and Savior. You have a new life, a new body, and you are Healed in Jesus Name. Until my time comes, I will continue to honor you by living my life with the same passion and commitment you taught and lived. Until then, I hope to sing with you again. Love You Forever, 'EP' Jacqueline Thompson, JV Chorus President (1980-82) Varsity Chorale President (1983-1984)
Glenda, You said something a few years ago and it is so true. "Special lives are always with us~ even after they are gone~ what a gift." You will always be with me. Give Jimmy and Dad a hug and kiss for me. I love you. Shelly (Me-Shell-My-Bell)
Glenda was the most influential teacher in my life. She taught me, and every other student she had, how to truly appreciate the joy music brings to your life. She was so passionate about her role in our lives, and determined to show everyone that "kids these days" could do something positive. More than anyone else, Mrs Casey was respected by every student she taught, and touched the lives of each of us. I miss her dearly and hope to sing for her again. May the Lord hold her, and Jim, in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers with the rest of her family, friends and students. BHS Varsity A Capella, and Encore 99-01.
Glenda will be greatly missed. I feel most sad for those that never had the blessing of being instructed and touched by her. Jim and Glenda are harmonizing in Heaven, and probably discussing with Gabriel about holding a choir clinic. We love you Glenda!
Mrs. Casey, You taught me so much besides just about music. I have been forever grateful as I still sing today because of you and Mr. Casey. I will always remember you and the good times. Crescendo, Encore, Mixed Choir of 1986. I love you and God bless:)
My dearest Mrs. Casey, I will miss you and your funny mottos so much! I know that you and Jim are together making beautiful music together along with my grandfather! My thoughts and prayers go out to your family, friends, former co-workers and students. You made such a difference in the lives of so many people! Thank you for making my high school experience the best time of my life!
"May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back; May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rain fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."
Because of Mrs. Casey I was part of magical musical moments that will live on in my heart as long as I do. She touched many more students who will carry on her legacy as well. She will be missed.
To Janice and family, I am so sorry to hear of Glenda's death. My Sister Sherry was in her class at school, and I will let her know. I am thinking about you and praying for you. Love, Janice White Lenig
