Gordon Ray Holcomb's Obituary
Holcomb Gordon R. (Ray) passed away peacefully on November 11, 2013 in bed with his beloved wife of seventy two years, Lucy, at his side. Ray was truly part of the greatest generation. He was born on December 25, 1920 on a farm in east Texas, somewhere between Klondike and Pecan Gap. A child of The Depression, he remembered losing all the money he earned picking cotton when the bank where it was deposited went broke. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps and spent the war flying in the European theater. He and Lucy married during one of his leaves and spent their wedding night in the backseat of a Dodge on the way to his post. After the war, he founded Top Hat Cleaners where he continued working until a month ago. Ray considered his family to be his top priority and is survived by Lucy, his sons, Craig (Hector) and Paul (Jan) and grandsons, Travis and Zac. His smooth swing was famous at Lakewood Country Club where he had three holes in one. He was a member of White Rock United Methodist Church for over sixty years where he was a Little League Coach, Chairman of the Stewardship Committee and every other committee at the church. Ray was also a longtime active member of the East Dallas Exchange Club where he volunteered in the Reading Is Fundamental program at Reinhardt Elementary School and at the model airplane meet. He and Lucy were serious Cowboy fans and joined a number of other Exchange couples in purchasing Cowboy Stadium bonds where they all sat together for over a decade. He served on the Dallas’ Board of Adjustment and as chairman of the local, state and national laundry and dry cleaning trade associations. Services will be on November 14 at 11AM at White Rock United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the charity of your choice.
