Gordon Boone Mckenzie's Obituary
Born January 1, 1910, he grew up in North Zulch, a close proximity to Madisonville, TX, during the time of wagons and horses when it took all day to get from North Zulch to Huntsville. Gordon later was in the U. S. Army in 1927 where he served as a cook. After leaving the service, he began working as a linotype operator, setting the print for newspapers throughout East and South Texas. He met and married Mary Francis Moon in 1936, having two children, Gordon Keith and Claralee. Mary Frances passed away in March 1947. Nine years later he met and married Bessie Ray Madison and remained happily married until her death in October 1998. He worked in the newspaper business until his retirement from the Dallas Times Herald in 1975. He and Bessie Ray then began enjoying their monthly ‘First Monday’ trips to Canton, selling antiques they collected over the years. He was a 57-year member of First Baptist Church of Dallas, and longtime member of the Gabriel men’s Sunday School class. Gordon is survived by his daughter, Claralee Benningfield of Dallas, son Gordon Keith McKenzie of San Antonio, and son-in-law and friend, Clifford Watson and their families of nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Gordon passed on to his new life with our Lord on February 3, 2008. While those he leaves behind have been truly blessed by his life and love, we rejoice in his renewal and connection to those who have gone on before him.
