Grace Moffitt's Obituary
Grace Todd Pratt Moffitt died July 7, 2010. She was born January 15, 1917, outside Henderson, TX, to Clate and Bessie Busby Todd. Grace graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, and later earned a Masters degree in Physical Education from SMU. Upon graduation from SFA, she began a long, successful career as a girls’ physical education teacher. She met her future husband, Floyd V. Pratt, in Tyler at a USO dance for returning soldiers, and they were married in Dallas in 1947. She taught for over thirty years in the Dallas public school system, first at Spence Jr. High, then at Hillcrest High, and finally spent many years teaching and coaching at Benjamin Franklin Jr. High. She also sponsored the drill team at Hillcrest and Franklin, and considered working with the drill teams the highlight of her career. While at Franklin, she was awarded a lifetime membership in the Texas PTA, honoring her years of devotion to teaching and her contributions to the school and community. After the death of her husband Floyd in 1981, she married Vernon C. Moffitt in 1985. They traveled often, and enjoyed their retirement until Vernon’s death in 1994. At the time of her death, Grace was a member of Northway Christian Church, and was a previous long-time member of Eastridge Park Christian Church where she had been active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship and in Double Nickel, the seniors’ club. In addition to her husbands and her parents, her brothers, Walter Todd and Ralph Todd, and her sisters, Mary Holleman and Ethel Bryan, precede her in death. Her daughter, Ethel Jean and her husband Cliff Stephens, a grandson, Charlie Stephens, a sister Erma Jean Douthit, a brother Orville and his wife Bobbie Todd, and many nieces and nephews survive her. Services are Monday July 12, 10:30 AM at Restland Cemetery in the Wildwood Chapel. Burial will follow at the Millville Cemetery, outside Henderson, TX, at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ralph Todd Award at Stephen F. Austin University, c/o SFA Alumni Association, P.O. Box 6096, SFA Station, Nacogdoches, TX 75962.
