She spent most of her school years in Kermit, Texas and her college years at North Texas College, receiving a BBA in Accounting in 1954. After graduation she moved to Midland to work in public accounting. There she met and married the love of her life and husband of 61 years, James Howell Cawyer, in 1957. The first eleven years of their marriage resulted in several moves including Kansas and Nevada and the birth of three sons, James (Jim) Cawyer, John Cawyer and Mark Cawyer. The family relocated to Dallas in 1966, and Harlene switched careers to public education. Most of her teaching years were spent in Deaf Vocational programs at Crozier Tech High School, Skyline High School and Samuell High School. Harlene retired from Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland, TX in 1991.
She was characteristically productive in her retirement years as a vibrant, service-oriented volunteer at Saturn Road Church of Christ, Baylor Garland Hospital, Lifeline Chaplaincy and The DeGolyer House at the Dallas Arboretum. She was a prolific hostess for baby and bridal showers, newcomers at church, supper club and bridge groups, and of course, family and friends. She will be fondly remembered for sending cards, marking birthdays and anniversaries, and recording detailed notes of gifts received and given.
Harlene is survived by her son Jim and wife Kelly of North Richland Hills and their two sons Chase (Taryn) of Birmingham, AL, and Corbin (Kristen) of Haslet, TX; son John and wife Annette of Plano, TX, and their three children Jeffrey (Jaime) of Dallas, TX, Jay (Tannah) of Frisco, TX, and Allie Moore (Logan) of Plano, TX; son Mark and wife Paige and their two children Bryce and Camille of North Richland Hills, TX.
