Harold Eugene Abbey's Obituary
Harold Eugene Abbey, age 93, of Dallas, arrived home with his Lord on November 28, 2023. Harold was born June 8, 1930, to Harold Sr. and Ruth Abbey in Syracuse, NY. He graduated from High School in Northville, NY, in 1948, and then attended Letourneau University in Longview, TX, graduating in 1951 as Valedictorian with a degree in Heat Treat and Metallurgy. He married Joyce Emily Young in 1952 in Randolph, NY, and in 1958, the family moved to Dallas, TX. He obtained a Master’s degree from University of Dallas in 1972. He worked in Quality Control for Vought Aeronautics, engineering parts for the space shuttle, the stealth bomber and the Skylink tram system at DFW Airport. He retired in 1992, after which he continued to do contract work involving quality control in the aeronautics industry. In 2005, Harold was recognized for his efforts toward the acquisition and restoration of the F4U Corsair, a World War II fighter aircraft. In 2012, Harold and other retired Vought employees completed 8 years of restoration of the V-173 Flying Pancake, an experimental aircraft from World War II, which is on display at Love Field’s Frontiers of Flight Museum. Harold traveled the world, including Switzerland and the Holy Land. He enjoyed ice skating, snow skiing and playing water volleyball. He was a long-time member of Scofield Memorial Church, serving in many capacities, and a faithful member of the Philathea Sunday School class. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; 3 sons, Mark Abbey & wife Analyn of Coppell, TX; Bruce Abbey & wife Claudia of Clemmons, NC; Curtis Abbey of Reno, NV; 2 daughters, Jean Beauchamp of Abilene, TX, and Jeannette Bortnem of Corinth, TX; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Van Epps. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
