One of my early experiences at Celanese I think gives good insight into Harry's well honed skills in leadership. It was at the presentation of the annual 13 yr Hydrocarbons forecast. I had been with Celanese 3 months at time of presentation and was charged with the Natural Gas portion. I was engaged in a back and forth discussion with Dan Jones, whom I believe was VP of international sales.
All of a sudden two guys in the back of the room (Ed & Howie). and simultaneously, in a loud voice, said "Who is this guy that we are arguing with?". Before I could respond, Harry stood and briefly reinforced my brief tenure and acknowledged my background. But then he said what I thought was an interesting commentary on running an organization. He said "If people would get out of their office and talk to people, they could get answers to their questions". (Not an exact quote but close enough.)
Then we continued with the meeting.
