Harvey Allen Childress Sr.'s Obituary
CHILDRESS, SR., HARVEY ALLEN Born June 4, 1913 in Teague, TX, passed beyond this world on April 28, 2008. In his lifetime, he worked tirelessly in the service of his God, preaching the gospel in countless Churches of Christ across the United States. Graduating Cum Laude from Abilene Christian College, in 1934 with a degree in Bible, he quickly moved into the ministry, first in Balinger, TX, and then in Midland, TX, San Diego, CA, Richfield, MN, Ogden, UT, Sedona, AZ and many more. Also, during this period, he served as the first President of York College, in York, NE. After retiring from the pulpit, he worked with the Waterview Church of Christ to create the Strengthening Mission Churches ministry, a program to help small congregations around the world in developing leadership, building plans, outreach and many other areas. After 65 years in the service of God, he retired from the ministry, but remained active at Waterview. He is preceded in death by his only son, Maj. H. Allen Childress, Jr. (USAF) Ret. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Sue Childress; his daughter-in-law, Marti Childress; his grandson, L. Allen Childress; his granddaughter and her husband, Stormi and Micah Goodspeed; great grandchildren, Foster, McCormic and Dare Goodspeed. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 1, 2008 at Waterview Church of Christ, 1409 Waterview, Richardson, TX with interment to follow at Restland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Harvey and Sue Childress Endowed Scholarship Fund at York College, 1125 E. 8th Street, York, NE 68467.
