Helen Mercedes Poe's Obituary
Poe, Mercedes Barnes Troutman our ‘Bamie’ passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family at home on January 19, 2008 in Dallas, Texas after having lived a full 95 1/2 years. Born on August 9, 1912 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to William Avery and Blanche Barnes, the eldest of six children. Mercedes was raised and graduated from high school in Shawnee. On October 17, 1935 she married LeRoy Troutman in Oklahoma City and their union was blessed with three children. After losing LeRoy to cancer in Wills Point, Texas on March 15, 1954, she moved her family to Dallas in 1955. Mercedes then married A.E. Poe Jr. in January of 1959. A.E. preceded her in death on October 20, 2002. While living in Dallas, Mercedes was very active in many clubs and volunteer organizations. She served in many offices and as president of Town North Business and Professional Women’s Club, ATLASTA Book Club and Methodist Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of Casa Linda United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women Auxiliary for 53 wonderful years. She and A.E. were longtime volunteers at Methodist Hospital and Mercedes received her 20 year pin for her service. One of her greatest joys was modeling in the Auxiliary styles show and participating in and heading the ‘Hat Day Luncheon’. She was also instrumental in initiating the ‘Heart Pillow Program’ for Methodist Hospital patients . She was very involved in her neighborhood crime watch. She and A.E. enjoyed many years of travel and loved telling that she had visited every continent except Antarctica. Preceded in death by her parents, William and Blanche Barnes; husbands, LeRoy Troutman and A.E. Poe Jr. ; brother, Francis Barnes; sisters Betty Roe and Lucille Walker and special friend, Rosa Lee Freeman. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Rochner and husband John M. Rochner Jr.; son, Charles ‘Buddy’ Troutman and wife Pam; daughter Janet Hughey and husband Bill; grandchildren, Robin Carpenter and husband Jim, Jennifer Rochner, Jeanna Rochner, Jason Troutman and wife Christi, Heather Pickett and husband John, John Paul Rochner, Hillary Hughey, Trey Hughey and wife Dana, Holland Hughey, Dr. Marc Stokes and wife Dr. Karen Stokes, Mandi Holton and husband Chris; great- grandchildren James, Elizabeth , Stephen, Ashley, and Allison Carpenter, Colton and Kinsley Troutman, Hannah and Madelyn Stokes, Laney Holton, Patton Pickett, Ford and Hayden Hughey; brothers Dick and Tom Barnes.
