Helen Stephens Storey's Obituary
Helen Hanks Stephens Storey, 96, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024 in Dallas, TX. She was the daughter of Harry Stephens and Johnnie Stephens Schatz of Helena, AR, and the beloved wife of Charles Porter Storey of Dallas, TX.
Helen was born in Helena, AR on Christmas Eve at Estevan Hall, a home that had been built and owned by her family for 8 generations. She attended Randolph Macon College, the University of Mississippi, and Southern Methodist University. She married Charles Porter Storey in 1950, a marriage that lasted 58 happy years.
Helen was a traveler extraordinaire and loved entertaining friends! She was deeply committed to the Junior League of Dallas, where she served as a Provisional Chair and Board member for 6 years; the Visiting Nurse Association where she served for 16 years; KERA Radio and TV; and she helped create the Docent Program at the Dallas Museum of Art in which she served for 20 years. Helen helped start Les Femmes du Monde benefiting the Council on World Affairs; was a member of the Dallas Garden Club, the Founders Garden Club of America, and the Dallas Women’s Club.
Helen is survived by her son, Porter Storey and daughter-in-law, Gail Storey of Boulder, CO; son, Harry Storey and daughter-in-law, Jan Storey of Plano, TX; and son, Fred Storey of Dallas, TX. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Philip Storey of Austin, TX; Bill Storey of Plano, TX; Christine Hassink of Tulsa, OK; Lisa Macha of Sugarland, TX; Charles Storey of Klamath Falls, OR; Brooke Storey of Plano, TX; Stephen Storey of Keene, NH; and Daniel Storey of Dallas, TX.; as well as 6 great-grandchildren.
Helen enjoyed good health, a good family, good friends, and a good life. She loved everything beautiful! On her behalf, we would especially like to thank the staff at the Ventana for their excellent care; Chunnell White-Miller and Teresa Rabago for their caring devotion to Helen; and all of Helen’s exceptional life-long friends.
Visitation for Helen will be held at Restland Funeral Home on Sunday, February 25, 2024, from 4-6 p.m. Per Helen’s request, she will be laid to rest at a private graveside ceremony.
