Dr. Herbert William Beutel Jr.'s Obituary
Dr. Herb Beutel, age 79, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimers. He died peacefully at the ranch in Seymour, Texas. Herb will be remembered for his intelligence, sharp wit, devotion to medicine, and love of the outdoors. He was born September 30, 1929 in Houston, TX, to Herbert William Beutel, Sr. and Vivian Cullum Beutel. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1946 and Texas A&M College in 1950. He earned his M.D. from Baylor University College of Medicine in 1954 and performed his residency under Dr. Michael DeBakey in Baylor University’s residency program from 1955-56 and 1958-61. He was also Dr. DeBakey’s Chief Resident during this time. Herb served as a Captain in the USAF from 1957-58 where he was Chief of Surgery at McConnell AFB in Wichita, Kansas. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1962 and was a member of the Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Southwestern Surgical Congress, M.E. DeBakey Society of Vascular Surgery, American Society of Gastro-Intestinal Surgery, and Dallas Society of General Surgeons. In addition to his work in various Dallas hospitals, he served as Chief of Surgery for Mesquite Memorial Hospital for 18 years and retired in April, 1989. Herb was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Schmucker Beutel, his daughter Nina Rogers Beutel, and his sister, Carolyn Beutel New and brother-in-law, Manfred E. “Fritz” New. Other survivors include his nieces Jeanne Elizabeth New, Jennifer New Yates and husband Shuford Yates and grandnephews William and Henry Yates, Hillary New Sinclair and husband Douglas Sinclair, and Catherine Allison New. He is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be led by Msgr. Milam J. Joseph on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 3:30pm at Restland Funeral Home’s Wildwood Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4144 N. Central Expressway, Ste. 750, Dallas, TX 75204.
