D.Ann Shiffler
Just a few months out of college in 1980, I was hired as an editorial assistant for DALLAS Magazine, which was published by the Dallas Chamber. The magazine fell under Herb’s management umbrella; he was our boss. While he had a lot of responsibilities at the chamber, he managed with servant leadership. He wanted to know what we needed to accomplish our goals and to excel. When I brought him a proposal to buy computers for the magazine, (Radio Shack TRS 80s), he approved the request. When the editor job came open, he encouraged me to apply, even though I was younger than all the candidates. I landed the job, and Herb encouraged me and talked me through many complicated situations. His belief in me made me believe in myself. He pushed the magazine team to new heights both editorially and commercially. I left in 1987, and in time we would all scatter out professionally. Herb attended our Dallas Magazine reunions, and he always had a fun story or memory to share and make us laugh. Jay and I offer condolences to Herb’s family.
