Herman Jay Hankamer, Jr., 78, of Dallas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 29, 2018 from complications from heart surgery.The family will receive visitors from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Restland Funeral Home Event Center, 9220 Restland Road, Dallas, Texas 75243.Jay was born in Galveston, Texas on December 8, 1939 to Herman Jay Hankamer, Sr. and Lois Paschetag Hankamer. He graduated from Ball High in 1957 and went on to earn a master’s in Industrial Engineering at Lamar University, class of 1970.From 1975 to 1986 Jay was a successful, custom home builder that specialized in high-end contemporary design. Over the years he built hundreds of homes in North Texas. Jay also worked for Santa Fe Railroad, built Steak and Ale restaurants, renovated hotels in New Orleans and St. Johns, and ended his career at Silverleaf Resorts as the Senior Vice President of Resort Development.Jay enjoyed building furniture, ponds, and patios in his spare time. He loved music and was a great cook. Many summer weekends were spent on the lake enjoying time with his family and friends.Jay was preceded in death by his father and mother, and his sister, Joyce Fay Hankamer.Jay is survived by his loving children; Hunter Jay and Heather Jean Hankamer; sister, Carol Freeman and her husband Roger Freeman of GalvestonHunter and Heather would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Medical City Dallas for the compassionate and expert care they gave their dad. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, Texas 75243.
