Hermelinda Cortegana's Obituary
Our beloved mother was, in every sense of the word, a true mom. Her life was a quiet symphony of selflessness, each note played in love for her family. Even in her final days, her thoughts never lingered on herself—they were always with us, making sure we were fed, cared for, and at peace. Above all else, she was a mother first: steadfast, nurturing, and endlessly giving. She taught us—her daughters and all who knew her—what unwavering faith looked like. She believed deeply that everything happened for a reason, that every joy and trial held a purpose. She carried that faith like a light within her, always smiling, always ready to brighten a room with laughter. Her hugs were warm and frequent, the kind that wrapped around your heart and made you feel safe. She gave of herself without hesitation, her love constant, deep, and unconditional. She cherished her daughters, her granddaughter, and her sons-in-law with a love so complete, it left no one untouched.
She was also a devoted teacher and missionary, with a lifelong passion for sharing the gospel and helping others understand it. She was called to serve in many teaching roles within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including adult Sunday School, Young Women’s, Seminary, and Relief Society. Each calling she held for years, never giving less than her best. Even after moving to the U.S., it wasn’t long before she was again called as an adult Sunday School teacher—another role she carried out with dedication and love.
She had a gift for explaining even the most complex gospel principles in simple, meaningful ways. My sister and I can still picture her at the dining room table, glasses perched on her nose, surrounded by open books and notes, carefully preparing for her next lesson. She always wanted to be ready to answer any question a student might have. That was who she was—always ready, always thoughtful, always teaching, and always loving.
