Homer Charles Snowden's Obituary
Homer Charles Snowden “Charlie”, age 82, passed away March 16, 2017, after a short illness at his home in Denton, Texas. He was born June 13, 1934 in Dallas, Texas to Maxine Courtney and Homer Wells Snowden. Both of his grandparents were early pioneers to Texas, the Snowden family, coming from the Southern states in the 1800’s. His grandfather Ervin Courtney immigrated from Illinois. He arrived in Littlefield, Texas after first living in Oklahoma Indian Territory and became the first sheriff of Lamb County, Texas. His father Homer Wells Snowden was a pioneer in the oil and gas industry. He was instrumental in discovering many early oil fields in Texas as well as California. Charlie spent his early years in Dallas, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High school in 1952. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and graduated with a degree in Geology in 1956. After graduation from OU he married his college sweetheart, Cherie Davenport and entered pilot training with the US Air Force. He was a pilot in the last Atomic Test that were conducted in the South Pacific. During the Viet Nam war he joined the Air Force Reserve from which he retired in 1985 as a Lt. Colonel with 21 years of service. During the 1960’s he worked in the independent oil and mining business in Texas, Louisiana, and Kentucky. He later worked for various Government agencies, retiring in 1995 from the District Office of Immigration and Naturalization. He is survived by his wife, Cherie for over 60 years; his children, Kevin Snowden (Lori), Kathleen Sims (Tom), and his 11 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Holly Unger. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 12:30 PM in the Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home.
