Dr. Hope Campbell Pankey, (Mrs. C. W. Pankey), DMV, passed away on May 21, 2016 in McKinney, Texas. She was born in Chicago, Illinois to Philip and Grace Campbell on April 30, 1918. Her family later moved to Wisconsin where Hope attended elementary and secondary schools in her home town of Madison. She enrolled at Michigan State University for her undergraduate work receiving her Bachelors degree in 1940. Hope remained at Michigan State, in East Lansing, because it was one of the few universities to allow women to enroll in their veterinary medicine graduate program. Upon obtaining her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1942 Hope became the first woman to obtain a license in the state of Wisconsin. One of the Department of Agriculture Chief’s declared that “Dr. Campbell was the first women to INVADE the veterinary field.” That was one of the many firsts during her 30 year career. Hope began working in laboratory research on trichomoniasis at the University of Wisconsin and then at the Fort Dodge Laboratories before reading a want ad in a veterinary magazine. Dr. Self, a well known Dallas veterinarian and Oak Cliff Councilman, invited her to visit Dallas to see if she would be interested in the job. That began a career as the first female veterinarian licensed in Dallas and the State of Texas. During her career she was featured in numerous articles in the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Times Herald and a variety of trade magazines. In 1957, Hope wed Cylde W. (Joe) Pankey in a ceremony at the DeSoto Missionary Baptist Church. They were married until Joe passed away in 1972. After she became a widow, Hope moved to Bangor, Maine to be with family. In 2002, she returned to Texas and lived in Plano before moving to McKinney. While living in Plano, Hope joined the Prestonwood Baptist Church developing friendships through her Sunday school class and various activities. Hope was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents Philip and Grace Campbell, her sister Constance Collins. She is survived by her nephews: Philip and wife Lana Sensenig of Atlanta GA, David Sensenig and wife Nancy of Worcester MA, Father Andrew Sensenig OMI of Juno AK, Tom Steele and wife Jodi of Bangor ME, great nephews Philip and Mark, great nieces Laura and Rachael and brother-in-law Larry Pankey and wife Sharyn.
