Howard George Hendricks' Obituary
HENDRICKS, HOWARD GEORGE affectionately known as “Prof,” entered the presence of the Lord, Jesus Christ on February 20, 2013. He was born on April 5, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, to George and Celia (Dickens) Hendricks, but was reared from an early age by his grandparents, Jacob and Cora Hendricks. He graduated from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, and did graduate studies in Dallas, Wheaton, and New York. He received an honorary doctorate from Wheaton College. After a brief term in the pastorate, Howie joined the faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught for 60 years, founding the Department of Christian Education and the Center for Christian Leadership. He served on the boards of many Christian organizations and was widely sought after as a speaker for such groups as Campus Crusade for Christ, Promise Keepers, The Navigators, Billy Graham’s The Cove, Search Ministries, Moody Bible Institute, Walk Thru the Bible, Family Life Ministries, and countless others. He was also involved in the founding of Pine Cove Christian Camps. Known for his humor and motivational skills, he traveled internationally training and encour-aging Christian leaders. A number of his books have become classroom texts, such as Living By The Book, Teaching To Change Lives, As Iron Sharpens Iron, and Color Outside The Lines, among others. For several years his voice was heard on the radio through the nationally syndicated program, “The Art of Family Living.” For eight years he served his friend Tom Landry as chaplain of the Dallas Cowboys. Howard was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Barr and her son, Tory. He leaves Jeanne, his wife of 65 years; his son Robert Hendricks of Charlotte, NC; his daughter Beverly (and Dale) Godby of Richardson, TX, and their three daughters: Alison (and Mike) Ligocki and son Liam of Allen, TX; Megan (and Remy) Fellman and daughter Hayden of Dallas, TX; and Lauren Godby of Dallas, TX; and his son William (and Lynn) Hendricks of Dallas, TX, and William’s three daughters by his late wife Nancy Manning Hendricks: Brittany Hendricks of Tuscaloosa, AL; Kristin (and Jonathan) Fant of Dallas, TX; and Amy Hendricks of Dallas, TX. The family wishes to express special thanks to Pam Cole, Prof’s long-time executive assistant, for her expert and tireless administration of his ministry affairs; and to Seth and Cheryl Hewitt, whose devoted friendship and care brought special comfort to our father in his final years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Stonebriar Community Church, 4801 Legendary Drive, Frisco, TX 75034.
