Howard Albert Lund's Obituary
In loving memory, Howard passed away October 17th, 2008 at the age of 91. Born May 7th, 1917 to Martin and Gina Lund in Dallas, Texas; youngest in a family of two brothers and three sisters. Raised by his Mother when his Father passed away in December of 1919, he grew up in the neighborhoods around the fair grounds, knowing everyone there. After graduating from Forest Avenue High School in 1936, he started working at the Mercantile National Bank in the mail room when it was still in the old Magnolia Building. Working his way up to teller, he left the bank in 1942 to join the Army Air Corp. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Training Command at Tarrant Field in Fort Worth before being shipped overseas to Tinian Island in the Marianas with the 20th Air Force. While in the service he married his sweetheart, Jane, on June 18th, 1943 whom he met while working in the Analysis Department at the Mercantile. He referred to Jane as “the sweetest and prettiest girl that ever worked at the Mercantile.” He returned to the Bank in 1946. Drawing on a wide range of banking experience, he worked Proof, Analysis, Float Table, Bookkeeping, Paying and Receiving, Collection and Installment Loan Window. He was elected Assistant Cashier in 1950 and stepped up to Assistant Vice President in 1951. He became Vice President of Installment Loans in 1961. On May 1st, 1979 he was elected Executive Vice President & Director of the Mercantile Texas Capital Corporation by the Board of Directors. Retiring in 1982 after 46 years of service at the Mercantile, many customer and bank friends wished him a long and happy retirement. He loved golfing, fishing and hunting, he particularly liked deer hunting in the mountains in Jeff Davis County. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Dallas for over 45 years. A loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, this Christian gentleman will be missed by all. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Jane, mother Gina, father Martin, and all his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Armstrong; son, Howard Lund Jr. and wife Laurel, and son, Mark Lund; grandson, Bryan Armstrong; granddaughters, Becky Armstrong and Kristen Gina Lund. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bethel Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
