Howell was steady at being full of joy. When he lost his beloved Barbara, so early it seemed to us, he remained diligent. Howell was a very smart 42 player and therefore had a great love for the double five. I played 42 with Howell and Barbara and a group of ?young couples? at Casa View at least once a month it seems looking back. They opened their home with the best of hospitality though both Howell and Barbara were working hard. They encouraged their children to love the church and the youth group. He was a very competitive player and loved to win and make you laugh in the process. He had a unique laugh that makes me smile. I played 42 with him and against him and somehow I always accused him of shuffling the dominoes so that the double five came to him. He accused me of the same in a good natured way. We never greeted each other without one of us saying, ?You got that double five in your pocket?? I think Howell had the ?double five? joy in his heart. He had the joy of the Lord in his heart. He had the commitment to His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that gave him joy and gratefulness in all circumstances. Larry Wishard

I first met Howell in 1969 as we were some of the first to move into new houses on Salem Dr. in Mesquite. We trick or treated together with our young children. We were blessed to go with them to Detroit, TX., preach at the Midway Church of Christ and spend an afternoon with uncle Joe and his family. Howell and Barbara were a special couple and appreciated by everyone. In 1965 we traveled together with a group to Ontario, Canada to help in the establishment of a new congregation. Howell was a special kind of christian man. He was always friendly to everyone, supported the good works of the church and led his family in bringing honor to his God. We ran into him quite often and always enjoyed our visits and updates on his family. May the best and richest of blessings be with all of his family as you follow in his example in walking in the steps of The Lord. – Jerry Arnwine

I just found out! I'm so sorry! I known both Howell and Barbra since I was 6-7 years old. I went Casa View and rode and worked the bus minstry all the way through high school. They were the most loving peolple. I got to visit their home time to time, they made feel like family. I knew Barbra also from school. Looking at the date I got the pleasure of running into him a the store a few days earlier and it no time had really past. I Loved them both! Amy Parker Nettles

I have never known a kinder, more humble man than Howell. With his gentle ways, his friendly greetings, and a reputation for integrity that was beyond reproach, he was ever a consistent representation of a disciple of Christ Jesus. Howell was an example to us all of a Christian who was in this world and yet was not of this world. The Lord reward him. He and Barbara were pillars of faith and examples of love. My kids and I first met Howell when they wanted to ride the Joy Bus at Casa View . We were attending the Mesquite church of Christ at the time. Howell drove the Joy Bus and when I met he and Barbara , I knew they were very special . Their love for the Lord was very evident. I admired and respected them more than any couple I'd ever met. They raised some wonderful kids. I didn't find out about his death until after his funeral. He was doing the Lord's work until the very end. When my kids got to the age that they thought they were too old to ride the Joy Bus, we went back to Mesquite C of C. I know he will be missed by everyone who knew him. The only comfort I can find is the realization that he is with his sweet Barbara & in the arms of the Lord enjoying Heaven.
