Hugh Lee Berryman's Obituary
Hugh Lee Berryman died on August 8, 2021, after a lengthy illness. He was eighty-eight.
Known to his friends as Buddy or Bud, he was born October 30, 1932 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Robert Lee and Alice Trichel Berryman. Bud’s older brother Robert—“Bobby”—was born in 1928.
Bud attended Southfield School and Byrd High School in Shreveport and Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, graduating in 1954. While at Washington & Lee, Bud was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws degree from the SMU School of Law in 1956 and was a member of the State Bar of Texas.
Bud served in active duty in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, and in the Army Reserve until 1962. While in the Army, Bud served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, providing legal assistance for soldiers.
Following his service in the Army, Bud moved to Dallas and established a law practice. There he met Mary Frances Traylor of Barnesville, Georgia, and the two were married in 1960.
Bud continued to practice law until his retirement in 2002.
Bud and Mary Frances were longtime members of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas. A lifelong outdoorsman, Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sailing. He and Mary Frances built and maintained a house on Lake Lewisville, where he kept a sailboat at the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club. The two were also regular attendees at the Dallas Opera. Later in life, Bud developed an interest in cycling, participating numerous times in the Hotter’n Hell Hundred bike race in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Mary Frances predeceased Bud, in 1997.
Bud is survived by his three children, Blake Berryman, Tris Casillas, and Brian Berryman, and six grandchildren.
