Dad was an active member of Lake Highlands Baptist Church (formerly Forest Avenue Baptist Church) from the day he was born until his death. In, February 1948, he was one of twelve men to be voted as a Junior Deacon (one of the youngest deacons at that time). He served in many capacities at the church, i.e. choir member and choir secretary, youth department, Sunday School teacher, usher, to name a few. He was a people person and a devoted Christian, son, son-in-law, husband, father, TI employee, friend, and neighbor. He retired from Texas Instruments after 25 years of employment.
As a young man he rode his bike all over Dallas delivering papers and worked with his dad at Swift and Company (a meat packing plant) in Fort Worth. He played softball on the church softball team and his position was that of catcher, he loved sports, but softball was his favorite.
As a Marine, during WWII, he was wounded 3 times, the last on Okinawa April 21, 1945 and was carried to Hawaii via the USS Hope. Overall, he had more than 1,500 entry wounds of shrapnel and yet he survived and went back into battle after several weeks in the hospital. He was a three-time Purple Heart Recipient and in April 2014 at the age of 91, he was presented the Quilt of Valor for his service in WWII Pacific Campaign, on his 91st birthday.
Our father was a dedicated family man who adored his wife Dorothy (it was love at first sight for him), loved his children and extended family. He lived his life dedicated to his Christian faith, church, family, friends, and neighbors.
