Hugh Nelson Moss' Obituary
Hugh Nelson Moss passed away peacefully on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2021, at the age of 77 in his home in Athens, Texas. His medical battles in recent years demonstrated the fighter he was and always has been.
Born in Dallas on July 11, 1943, to Leo and Leola Moss, Hugh joined the Navy at the young age of 16, serving as an Aviation Ordnanceman in the Heavy Attack Squadron on the USS Ranger Aircraft Carrier with operations off Okinawa, the Phillipines and along the southern coast of Japan, during the Vietnam War.
During his life he was a carpenter, salesman, truck driver and in later years he owned and operated several restaurants in the Waco area. In 1999, he retired to his beloved home in the country in Athens where he enjoyed mowing his pasture, raising chickens and spending time with Helen, his wife of 20 years.
His sense of humor was unmatched and always with him even up until the very end when he jokingly chided his young A&M Doctors for being Aggies. A softy at heart, Helen said he carried around acorns to give to strangers for good luck.
He is survived by his wife Helen “sweetpea”; his daughters, Susan, Audrey, and Heather; grandchildren, Leanna, Nicolas, Tres, and Giana; sister, Carolyn and her husband Jim, 32 nieces and nephews, including grands and great grands.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
