My Uncle Hy really came into my life later, rather than earlier. Living in Tulsa, then Harlingen, then Dallas, there was always too much distance when I was young for us to form a relationship, but once the Internet came on the scene, we found each other and we were kindred souls. As Bob's oldest daughter, I had heard all the family stories since I was a child and his being the youngest of the 9 who made it to adulthood, we found that we could share our stories about the family, as well as our love for a good joke or tale. He was an expert reconnoiter who, like my dad, would breath life into the written as well the spoken word. He would send me pictures of airplanes and stories about different pilots and I actually looked at them and read them…just for him…because honestly, it was all Greek to me! I will miss him desperately and deeply. He was my tie to the old ways, to my dad and my uncles and aunts, but mostly…this is hard to explain…he was a big part of who I am. As I said before, we were kindred spirits. He loved speaking bits of Yiddish to me, relating his life in the assisted living program, his accomplishments there, his going to temple with friends, and I adored and cherished each letter. I'll miss that most of all. What is also so hard is because we were so far away, I can't feel him as not here, not at the other side of my computer. I'm waiting for that email, that joke…but I guess that's a good thing because as long as I live, he will remain in my heart, always eager to tell a good story, to share an experience. I love you so much, my precious Uncle. Fly with those new wings, you earned them.

My uncle Hy was an amazing person. A real human being. He was the youngest of nine siblings, including my father Bob Cohen. He has followed his wife, parents, and siblings to the other side. He may be physically gone, but his soul lives on; and resides in the hearts of those who loved him. I will miss his stories about the Cohen family; and his insights into his life. He was a shining light; and a touchstone in my life. He was unforgettable; and will always be remembered in my heart; and the hearts of his children; grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
