Irene Myrtle Abdo's Obituary
Abdo, Irene M., passed away on April 29, 2010 in Dallas, Texas. Irene was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina to William and Carrie Nelms. As a young woman, Irene moved to Norfolk Virginia, where, during World War II, she met a handsome navy officer named Jack M. Abdo who became the love of her life. After the war, Irene moved to Dallas Texas to marry Jack and begin their life’s journey together. Irene’s life unfolded in seasons. As a young homemaker and mother, Irene adored her two sons, providing them with the measured guidance of a parent and companionship of a best friend. While financial success came from Jack and Irene’s hard work in the family restaurant business, Irene often stated that her greatest fortune was her husband and two sons. After her husband’s death, Irene accepted the role of restaurateur and business woman in which she touched the hearts and lives of thousands. For Irene, the food she served was merely the vehicle through which she could share a smile, offer words of encouragement or hearten any customer. After selling the family business, Irene traveled and enjoyed entertaining friends lavishly in her home. As a hostess, she charmed many with her southern manner, sweet smile and love of life. Irene also reacquainted herself with the game of bridge and became an avid player in numerous groups including the Town North Women’s Club and Churchill Thursday Bridge Club, among many others. Irene’s strength and faith in the Lord were tested on numerous occasions. Robert Abdo, her eldest son, tragically died at the age of 32; then, her husband Jack became ill and passed away within a few years. Throughout these and other trials, Irene showed the same sense of grace, dignity and tenacity with which she lived her entire life. Through various illnesses, Irene never complained, kept her faith in the Lord and held her head high in situations which would have discouraged even the bravest soldier. Following her husband’s death, Irene lived with her surviving son, Danny W. Abdo, who loved her more than life itself. Throughout her life, Irene was a living example of goodness, honesty, kindness, unselfishness and most of all love. Irene will be missed by all who knew her, none more than by her son, Danny, who knew that Irene Abdo was truly an angel on earth. Visitation will be held Sunday May 2nd from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be held on Monday May 3rd at 10:00 am at Restland Memorial Chapel.
