I recently had a dream last week about Jack (It’s now August 10, 2025)…Since I am no longer on any social media platforms, I decided to google Jack Chase and of course his obituary popped up much to my dismay and sadness.
I was the Epic/Sony Urban Promotion Rep. from 1987-1994/95. There are so many fond memories of Jack during that time, along with Liz, who was his personal assistant/secretary…Our annual regional branch meetings was an event unmatched by typical meetings. The Southwest Branch was renowned for the tequila shots that everyone had to engage in, even myself who did not drink.
My initiation into this ritual made me an official member with many ensuing and unforgettable moments and memories…
Jack was methodical, extremely organized; and the SW branch under his leadership was a very well oiled machine.
He was firm, but kind and fair in all his undertakings.
After the SW branch closed like most did,
I had the opportunity of being invited to his lovely home for an anniversary dinner for him and Liz. It was during this time I realized he was not only my former branch manager, but a friend!
My belated condolences to Liz, his family, friends and colleagues.

Jack and I met in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1962 or 1963 when we were about 16 or 17. He had a band that needed a drummer, and I was a drummer looking for a band. We named the group The Mad Hatters. We were very popular in the state. Our best gig was in Marshalltown, Iowa, where we played Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. We cut three records: one was Route 66, and the B side written by Jack entitled Her Love. The third track was on an album featuring Iowa bands. Our track is I Still Love You. The band is in the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The night before we cut our first record, Jack told the Marshalltown crowd that if they made a lot of cheering noise they could be on our record. They did and Jack taped it. That is the cheering on Route 66. We also had an old school bus painted purple with white polka dots. We used the bus to transport the band and friends to gigs.
Jack and I shared an apartment that was an old house divided into apartments. We were on the third floor at the top. I know Jack used to like to talk about it. It was pretty shabby. We affectionately called it the Room at the Top, or RATT. Jack’s day job was at a record store. He was always bringing home the latest music. Jack loved R&B, blues and jazz in addition to rock.
After the RATT, Jack took a job in Kansas City. He called me from KC and told me I should come to KC. We shared an apartment two more times in KC. We joined a band in KC called the Horns of Plenty. It was like Marshalltown all over again. We packed the place every night. As all good things must end, Jack moved back to Des Moines for his job. I saw him rarely after that.
I last saw Jack at Sue’s (Dick’s wife) 40th birthday party in the Ozarks. We had a great time catching up. I met Liz then. Jack and I last talked in 2009-10. We talked about his health issues; he was very proud of Nathan. I did not know that Deidre had also passed away. I used to babysit her.
I hope this sheds some light on a part of Jack’s life that you may not have known about.
For Liz and Nathan: I am deeply saddened and sorry for your loss. If at any time you have questions about this part of his life, I encourage you to contact me at rksample154@gmail.com.
Jack was a classmate of mine at Urbandale Highschool in Urbandale Ia. We were in the class of 1965 Jack moved to Webster City Iowa in his Junior year but remained at a friend of the Class of 1965. He returned to our class reunions even though he graduated from Webster City High school. He was respected by all of his classmates. It was a sad day to hear about his passing and I will be informing all of his Urbandale classmates about his passing.
