James Nicholas "Nick" Devenport's Obituary
James Nicholas Devenport, born August 8th, 1981, in Corpus Christi, TX, passed away January 26th, 2023.
An elite mid-distance runner, he traveled the western hemisphere running for USA Track and Field, Baylor University, and the Kentucky Wildcats, sharing his passion and boundless energy with everyone he encountered. After his running career, Nick continued to find success as a vocalist and developed a love for his work in real-estate and multi-family construction.
During his high school and college career, Nick was an exceptionally decorated athlete. Many of his track and field records still hold today. Twenty-three years later, his Junior Olympic record for the 800-meter race stands strong at 1:49.49. Nick ran at the World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile as a freshman at Baylor and won many titles in the SEC and Big XII conference championships. However, track was not Nick’s only talent. Going into his first year of high school, he played on the first Mesquite team to ever go to the Pony League World Series. He was also an accomplished tenor vocalist who competed at the state level. He earned a full ride to both universities he attended, Baylor University and the University of Kentucky, and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.
Among his many great accomplishments, Nick's family was his proudest achievement. After meeting in 2002, he married the love of his life, Rebecca, and they had three amazing children, Avery, James, and Calla. His pride and love for his children was evident to everyone he met, and he lived to make them proud.
Nick always enjoyed talking on the phone and singing with those he loved. Recently, he started selling sports cards in his online shop, and with his friends, he spent time playing fantasy football and poker.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Susanne, and their three children, Avery Nichole, James Alexander, and Calla Anne. He is also survived by his mother Julie Teague and step-father Bruce, his father James Dennis Devenport; grandparents, Joyce and James “Jim” Devenport, Dorothy Overstreet, Jeanette Dickey, Anne and Gene Teague; siblings, Nathan and Natalie Teague; mother- and father-in-law, Janet and Irwin “Bogie” Price; sister-in-law Jaci Price; aunts, Andrea, Jennifer, Lynda, Martha and Deborah; uncles; Jeff, Craig, Chris, Brian and Rob; nieces and nephews, Devin, Kaelynn, Jaxon, Sophie, Bennett, and Hudson; and step-mother Melode Braun. Moreover, he is survived by cousins who were lifelong friends and companions as well as the many wonderful, talented people he met on life’s journey.
He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Robert Earl Dickey and Charles Overstreet; his uncle Mike Wilson; and his brother-in-law Dr. Irwin “Bo” Price. He was also preceded in death by two of his favorite all-time coaches, Steve Mokszycki and Ed Mellado.
He will be remembered for his brilliant mind, record-setting athletic performances, and devotion to his wife and children.
Services will be conducted by Restland Funeral Home. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Sunday, February 5, and the Memorial service will begin 2PM Monday, February 6.
