coach and mentor, passed away on November 1, 2024, at the age of 91. Born in Houston, Texas, on April 22, 1933
Parents: Edna Musey & Jemel (Jimmy) Dieb who owned & operated Dieb Dry Goods in Sunset and Alvord, Texas for decades.
Jim was known for his deep dedication to his family, students, athletes, and leaving a legacy of resilience, kindness and passion for learning.
Jim graduated from High School in Alvord, Texas at the age of 16. He was a young achiever with a talent for both academics and athletics. He was recruited by the Pampa Oilers to play semi-professional baseball, yet his father insisted he obtain a college degree. He was awarded a scholarship at Decatur Baptist College, where he played football his freshman year before transferring to the University of North Texas to complete his undergraduate studies. His education was briefly interrupted by his two years of honorable service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. During this time he met and married Diane Howard. After which he returned to UNT to earn his master’s degree in Chemistry and Biology. He also continued to work towards a PhD at UNT and Texas Woman’s University.
He taught at UNT part time for 40 years as well.
At the age of 21, Jim began his long career in education at Lewisville High School. He taught biology, served as assistant football coach, and took on roles as head baseball and softball coach. Under his leadership, the Fighting Farmers baseball team won the Texas State Championship in 1961, a proud achievement for Jim and his star catcher, Walt Garrison.
In 1966 Diane passed away from leukemia.
He later met and married Maureen Nayfa, they were married for 48 years.
Eventually, Denton Independent School District made Jim an offer he couldn’t refuse. He was appointed Director of the Science Department for the DISD where he inspired generations of students and staff alike, known for his knowledge, dedication and compassion.
Jim had a calling for teaching and generosity. He will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, former students, and athletes as a guiding force and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
