James Edward Houston's Obituary
James E. Houston
September 24, 1941-March 31, 2026
Born to Joseph and Dorothy Tresp Houston, Jim was a longtime Garland resident who passed away on March 31. He married Susan Baldwin Houston on September 9, 1967, in Augusta, Georgia, after a short courtship. Jim was a 1961 Garland High School graduate and later joined the Army and then the Army Reserves.
Jim had two children who loved him deeply. Brande Houston Williams and her husband, Jason, and Shay Houston and his wife, Jill. He had three grandchildren whom his world revolved around: Brittany Williams Cotten, Julianna Houston and William Houston.
Jim and Susan loved to travel, whether it was camping with their children, road trips to get away or the many cruises they went on. He was very involved with his children and grandchildren. He coached both Brande and Shay in soccer, he was a Garland Soccer Association board member and referee when they were younger, and he went on many high school band trips with them as well. He would do everything with his grandkids, taking them to lunch, picking them up from school on occasion, and watching their soccer games, softball games, football games, orchestra concerts, band concerts and theatre performances.
Jim is survived by wife Susan Houston; children Brande (Jason) Williams and Shay (Jill) Houston; grandchildren Brittany (Tristan) Cotten and Julianna and Charlie Houston; and many nieces and nephews he loved very much. He is preceded in death by parents Dorothy and Joseph Houston, sister Anita Powell, brother Bobby Houston, and grandchild Jordan Houston.
He was known by many names, James, Jim, Jimmy, Dad, Paw, Grumpy and Uncle Jimmy. The family knew how you were connected by the name you called him. Jim will live on through the many lasting memories he formed with each person he came in contact with.
