Rev. James L. Hwang's Obituary
Reverend James L. Hwang
Sept 6, 1931 - April 23, 2025
James L. Hwang was born in the Nanzhuang township of the mountainous Miaoli county in northwest Taiwan. He was the eldest of two born to a midwife mother and schoolteacher father, who later became a medical doctor.
Because of an accident during his childhood that nearly claimed his life, his mother made a pact with God that her son would serve the Lord. When he went to Tainan city to attend Tainan Theological Seminary, he met his future wife, Janet, who was studying early childhood Christian education. Together, they served various grass-roots Presbyterian congregations in rural outposts and vulnerable groups such as prisons throughout Taiwan, along with son William and daughter Meilliam.
Following the divine purpose of his faith, the darkness of any situation or setting would not keep him from reaching out. Reverend Hwang immigrated to the United States and worked in ministries in Delaware for a few years before his wife, son, and daughter were able to immigrate. The family settled in Alhambra, California and started a small church serving Asian immigrant families for three decades. During his retirement, he and his wife moved to Richardson, Texas and immersed themselves in the growing Asian Christian community.
He is survived by his son, Dr. William J. Hwang (wife Chiufang), grandson Dr. Barrington J. Hwang (wife Yue, son Kai), grandson Abraham, and daughter Meilliam. His wife Janet preceded him. Outside of his family, he is also survived in spirit by the thousands of attendees whose lives he’s moved in his sermons.
You can Rest in Peace Reverend Hwang. In your name and in Jesus’, we will carry the faith to others as you did for us.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, May 10th at 10:30am at the Restland Memorial chapel in Richardson, Texas and graveside burial following.
