James H. Joynt Sr.'s Obituary
James (Jimmie) Hamilton Joynt, Sr., 91, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025.
Jimmie was born November 14, 1933, in Flat River, Mo., to Hattie Adams Joynt and F.R. Joynt. He was a 1952 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas. Enlisting in the Navy in 1955, he served as a Petty Officer Third Class.
At age 14, Jimmie started a radio repair shop on his parent’s back porch. He later attended the RCA Institute of Technology in New York City, studying broadcasting. Jimmie was part owner of GEM Appliance Company in Port Arthur, but his first love was radio. In January 1969, KCAW AM-1510 signed on for the first time with a country music format. Wanting the business to grow, he later acquired FM 93.3, renaming the station KYKR, which became #1 in the market.
Always looking for a new adventure, he opened a home satellite audio/visual business in the early 80’s. In 1993 Jimmie moved to the DFW area, where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Sorrels. They were married in September of 1996 and were married for 21 years until Evelyn’s passing.
Jimmie was an accomplished pilot and scuba diver. He enjoyed traveling, dining out, and movies.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Felix Joynt, and his wife Evelyn.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Joynt Barrett, and husband Jim of Port Arthur, Texas; his son James Joynt, Jr. and wife Rhonda of Wylie, Texas; his granddaughters Kati Mize, and husband Andrew of Flower Mound, Texas, Kari Barrett, of Katy, Texas and Delaney Joynt of Wylie, Texas; and a great-granddaughter, Macy Mize.
Jimmie is to be cremated, and a private graveside service will be held with family and close friends at Restland, Dallas.
