James Glenn McCoy's Obituary
James (Jim/Jimbo) Glenn (Mac) McCoy was born March 10, 1947, to James Wendell McCoy and Dorothy Lee Medearis McCoy in Abilene, TX. He was the second son born to James & Dorothy. N. Craig (Mac) McCoy was their firstborn.
Jim attended Tivy Elementary, Tivy Jr High and Tivy High School in Kerrville, TX. Jim graduated in May of 1965. He lettered in football and basketball and was vice-president of his senior class.
He attended Southwest Texas State University now Texas State University from September 1965 to June 1969. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
In September of 1969, he reported to Naval Aviation Officers Candidate School (AOCS) in Pensacola, Florida. He was commissioned on February 6, 1970. On February 7, 1970 he married Mary Lou Johnson (McCoy), his college sweetheart. After three proposals, Mary Lou changed her answer from “not now” to “yes.” They were married for 39 love-filled years and had two wonderful children, Carrie Lynn born in October 1973 in Brunswick, Maine, and Todd Jacob born in July 1980 in San Antonio.
After completing flight training Jim was assigned to VP-11 in Brunswick, Maine. From April 1971 to June 1974, he deployed 4 times. One deployment in 1972 was to Thailand and The Philippines where he flew patrol missions in support of the Vietnam War. His last assignment in the Navy was to the ROTC unit of the University of Texas in Austin where he earned a Master of Mathematical Education degree. Jim resigned his commission in the US Navy in October 1977 and took a job with Southwestern Bell. He worked for Southwestern Bell for 24 years, retiring in 2002. After retiring from Southwestern Bell, he started teaching at Wayland Baptist University in San Antonio. He taught until January 2008 when Mary Lou was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. He became her full-time caregiver until her passing on June 18, 2009.
In December 2011, Jim relocated back to the Dallas/Garland area to be closer to his children and grandchildren. In 2012 he started dating Marilyn LeCount. After a year of dating, they were married on September 28, 2013. When they started dating it never crossed Jim’s mind that he would require the care of an experienced oncology nurse. Marilyn had 26 years of experience in that field. Six weeks after Jim and Marilyn were engaged, Jim got the diagnosis of cancer of the GI tract. They literally planned their wedding from the oncology infusion room in three weeks! Thus, their six-year marriage launched to embrace being newlyweds, retirees, world travelers and cancer warriors all at once. Jim lost his fight to cancer on March 14, 2020.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou Johnson McCoy and his parents Dorothy Medearis McCoy and James Wendell McCoy.
