James Arthur Schroer's Obituary
James Arthur Schroer
December 14, 1945 – May 16, 2026
James “Jim” Arthur Schroer of Richardson, Texas, passed away at home on May 16, 2026, after a long illness.
“Jimmy,” as he was always known among his immediate family, was born on December 14, 1945, in Fort Collins, Colorado, and grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Los Alamos was then, and remains today, an active military installation and the birthplace of the Manhattan Project, where his father worked as a civil servant following World War II.
As a young man, Jim excelled in athletics. As a point guard for his high school basketball team, he was named to the Class A NM All-State Team twice, and in 1964, as a senior, he helped lead his team to the Class A State Championship. That same competitive drive carried over to the golf course, where he played competitively through his college years. Golf remained a fixture throughout his adult life, played more casually over the decades but never without the focused attention of a man who cared about doing things well. (Except fix his broken putting stance, perhaps his most publicly contrarian opinion) Tennis and waterskiing would eventually round out his lifelong love of sports and recreation.
Jim was an excellent student and athlete continuing on to the University of New Mexico from Los Alamos High School in 1964. Immediately upon graduation, within days Jim joined International Business Machines aka IBM where he spent his entire professional career.
In 1967, Jim married his soulmate, Jane (Hilton) Schroer. His oldest son, Jeffrey, was born in 1971 in Albuquerque, and a brief chapter in Denver Colorado brought his younger son, Jason, into the family in 1973. The family eventually settled in Richardson, Texas, a suburb of Dallas in 1980 where they continued building their lives together in the same home Jim passed in this Spring.
He remained passionate about sports throughout his life, whether playing, watching, or cheering from the sidelines of a Little League game. His devotion to the Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, and Rangers was also a constant over the years.
Jim’s dedication to his family was unwavering. He never missed an opportunity to support the people he loved most. Family vacations were often built not around destinations, but around people: finding another branch of the extended family and spending time together. When his grandsons, Maxwell and Bennett, arrived, Jim took on the name his own father had carried before him: Grampy. It marked the beginning of his deep and enduring love for the next generation.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jane Schroer of Richardson, Texas; his sons, Jeffrey Schroer and wife Gail Host of Brooklyn, New York, and Jason Schroer of Dallas, Texas; and his beloved grandsons, Maxwell and Bennett Schroer of Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mildred Schroer, and his brother, John “Johnny” Schroer. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd at 2pm at Restland, Richardson, Texas – Wildwood Chapel and brief reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or the City of Richardson Animal Services in tribute to Jim’s lifelong relationship with dogs, many local rescues.
