Jane Austin Barns' Obituary
Born in Austin, TX April 2, 1918 and died November 10, 2011 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband James (Jim) Barns, her childhood sweetheart, son Gregory Barns, and twin granddaughters Kimberly and Carrie Cole. She graduated from Highland Park High School, and attended the University of Texas. A member of Alpha Phi sorority, she remained very active in the Dallas alumni and chapter. Having returned to Austin in 1936, she became manager of the school savings department in an Austin Bank until her marriage in 1941, returning to that position while her husband served in the armed services overseas. The Barns resided in Dallas and for many years, she did volunteer work for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and became a member of the board as director of volunteers. For more than twenty years she taught Sunday school in the pre-school division at Park Cities Baptist Church where she was a member. She and her husband were private plane pilots, and as members of the Texas Game Fishing Club were deep sea fishing advocates. She is survived by her daughter Beverly Barns, grandsons Frank Douglas, Stephen Barns, Greg Barns, Jr., James Barns, and granddaughters Melanie Clary and Lisa Barns, and ten great-grandchildren. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, and former daughters-in-law Cherie Taylor, Lori Barns, and Kathy Barns. Honorary pallbearers are Mrs. Barns’ grandsons and Shane Johnson, Drew Johnson, and Jimmy Chappell. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 3pm at Restland Wildwood Chapel with Pastor Tom Hill officiating. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation if desired.
