Jane Ann Bates' Obituary
Jane Ann Bates, 92, passed away gently in her sleep on July 26, 2023. She was lovingly surrounded by her four children.
Jane was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on February 16, 1931, to her parents, Doris Ferrall Jackson and Cyrus Lowell Jackson. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the University of Iowa where she majored in Sociology. She went on to study classical ballet at the Rose Lorenz Dance Studio.
Jane married the love of her life and partner, M. Joseph “Joe” Bates, on December 27, 1952. They moved to Washington, D.C., where Joe attended and graduated from Georgetown University Law School. They eventually settled in Dallas, Texas, where she was active in a number of volunteer organizations. She was a member of PEO Chapter S, Dallas Symphony League, Dallas Opera Guild, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Mary Martha Gourmet Luncheon Group, Dallas Bar Wives and Pierian Book Club. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and served on a variety of school boards.
Jane loved traveling the world, her condo on North Padre Island and playing bridge. She had played bridge all of her life and when she discovered her bridge partners at The Tradition, she was overjoyed. She was a great cook and an outstanding parent. She ferried four young children to every conceivable event and did it with love and care. She was also an accomplished pianist and seamstress.
Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe, her grandson, Matthew Joseph Locke and her son-in-law, George DeWald. She is survived by her four children: Elizabeth Bates Locke, Catherine Bates DeWald, Thomas Joseph Bates, John Stephen Bates and her granddaughter, Rebecca Catherine Locke.
Her funeral service will be at St. Rita Catholic Church, 12525 Inwood Road in Dallas on Monday, August 14 at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers please make donations in her name to the North Texas Food Bank.
