Janice Stenton-Sherrill's Obituary
Janice Stenton-Sherrill was born Janice D. Owen in Denver Colorado in November 1940 and went to be with our Lord unexpectedly and during her sleep on January 19, 2020; she was 79 years old. At the age of 18 while living in Redondo Beach California, she married Gene Murry Hurbert Stenton after having met him only six weeks earlier. She shared a loving 36 year marriage until his death in 1996. They had two daughters Kimberly (Kim) Ann and Rhonda Jean which they raised in California and then Oregon after having moved there following Gene’s retirement from the Marine Corp. Janice was always a caregiver and worked in the hospital in the Intensive Care Unit for Labor and Delivery at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland Oregon for more than a decade. She received a calling from the Lord to study his word and in faith, enrolled in Portland Bible College and earned her Degree in Theology in 1978. Sometime shortly after earning her degree, she became an Ordained Minister. She was on staff at Aloha Community Bible church ministering to Seniors for many years and was a faithful member of that church family for over 30 years before moving to Texas. Janice’s daughter Kim (Stenton) Hunter went to be with the Lord after complications related to Lupus, battling bravely for more than 10 years. Janice and her loving son-in-law Brian Hunter cared for Kim until her passing in 1993. Janice married Gene’s step brother Richard (Dick) Sherrill after Gene’s death, someone she had known her entire adult life and someone that shared a deep love for the Lord. Janice loved and cared for Dick until his passing in 2005. In 2006, Janice moved to Plano, Texas to be closer to her daughter Rhonda and son-in-law Barry Hill. She found a new church family at The Heights Baptist church and was a member of the Singing Saints, having also loved to minister through music. In the last few years of her life, she was frequently found at a family-owned local eatery and had developed a deep friendship with the owner, staff and many of the patrons of that restaurant.
Janice’s light shined so brightly and she touched so many lives through her years. She loved the Lord with all her heart; she loved all people and only saw the good in them. Mostly, she wanted everyone to know the love of the Lord as she does. She never missed an opportunity to minister and let the love of the Lord shine through her. She was the best example of a Mom and started every day in prayer and devotion and would often lead prayer chains for the sick and the lost. Janice was a loving Mom, her faith and family was most important to her in life and she has made a lasting mark on all those that knew her. Janice will be missed dearly but know she is now dancing with the Lord, reunited with her daughter and husband, and singing in the Lord’s Heavenly choir.
Janice was preceded in death by Gene MH Stenton (Husband), Kimberly Ann Hunter (Daughter), Donna Hulse (Mother), James Edward Owen (Father), Richard Sherill (2nd Husband), Jerry Owen (Brother). Janice is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Rhonda and Barry Hill, Julie (Owen) Moreno (Niece) and Jeremy Owen (Nephew).
Janice will be honored at a Memorial Service to be held at The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson, Texas on Monday, January 27, 2020 at 3:00pm.
