To the Wieland Family- From an email I wrote today, to a friend- To wit: R- You remember that I wrote you, back in August of 2015, about going to the funeral of the husband of Janice Wieland, beloved speech teacher of mine in High School and college (Beloved connoting, of course, a certain, um, tolerance, sprinkled with great good humor)? Her obituary was in the paper today; seems she passed on Feb 11- RIP- She was 90- Service on the 18th of this month- And I am mighty glad I had the opportunity to see her once again, to reminisce, and share a few chuckles, and to thank her for all she did for me- I'll never understand why more of her former students weren't there… Ah well… And it gives me pause, once again, to remember the few teachers who inspired me, and, more importantly, befriended me- Blessings on her, and Godspeed… -Edward Flynn

Mrs Wieland's speech class at Bryan Adams my sophomore year, 1966-67, was my first real introduction to public speaking. I remember my first speech my knees shook and I wasn't sure I could stand. Mrs. Wieland assured me that everyone experiences those kinds of feelings and that the more you do the thing that causes you those kinds of feeling, the more relaxed you would become. After close to 50 years in ministry, stepping up to a microphone, or looking at a congregation, I still feel a bit of those nerves, but they don't last long and I quickly fall into a rhythm and experience sheer joy in sharing. I have often wondered where Mrs. Wieland was and regret that I am just now finding out she was still in the area. (Although I did spend 27 years out of the area before returning.) Would love to have spent some time with her. She will never fully understand how much she helped kids like me learn the joy of public speaking. I trust that now she has received the ultimate compliment, from the greatest speaker of all time, as Jesus received her and said, "well done."
I just learned of Mrs. Wieland's passing. I have thought of her throughout the years as she was my favorite teacher in high school. From the first speech class on a whim to joining the speech team and drama club, I was a devoted student of hers. She was always encouraging and offered criticism in the most positive way. I became a teacher, and my experience in her classes helped me face parents, teachers, students, and administrators when I had to teach or present. She has been with me in so many ways over the years. I, too, wish I had known she was in this area as I would have loved to have seen her. Mrs. Wieland was one of the most gracious, strong, and endearing women I have even known. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Lynette Elliott Morgan
