Janice Carole Wieland's Obituary
Dr. Janice Carole Abels Wieland, Professor Emeritus, was born Sunday, March 13, 1927, at 9:30 AM. Her mother said she was born in time to go to Sunday School, which was directly across the street at First Presbyterian Church of Freeport, Illinois. She was born to her father Simon Joseph Abels and her mother, Viola Marie Lehman Abels. Janice graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications. She was a member of the Omicron chapter of Chi Omega Sorority and also was part of the 6 member women’s musical group who sang with the U of I Men’s Glee Club. She was offered two contracts to teach after graduation, however, she chose training to become a stewardess with United Airlines, flying east & west out of Chicago, Illinois and was recognized as the first stewardess from Freeport, Illinois. Janice Carole Abels and Roger Earl Wieland said their wedding vows on Sunday, June 18, 1950, in the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport. Following Roger’s graduation from the U of I, they relocated to Dallas, Texas, where they raised their daughter, Cynda Carole, and their son, Roger Vance. Roger and Janice were married 65 years until Roger’s death on August 21, 2015. Mr. Wieland had a career in finance and was Bank Vice-President in Richardson, Texas for many years. Janice began her career as a teacher at age 17 with an Emergency Teaching Certificate from the State of Illinois. Her teaching career spanned 50 years and encompassed 1st grade through graduate school. She earned a Master’s Degree from Southern Methodist University in the Oral Interpretation of Literature and a Doctorate from East Texas A&M University. She spent 30 productive years with the Dallas County Community College District. She was honored by her peers by being selected Teacher of the Year in 1989. Janice impacted the lives of countless students and colleagues and went on to have meaningful relationships with many of them. She retired in 1991, however, she initiated and directed the Communication Internship Program for Brookhaven College until 2004. Throughout her career, she also pursued her love of horses by raising, training, and showing Arabian horses. Her purebred gelding, RA Dynasty and her purebred mare, Orozaba, were both awarded National Championships in Gelding Halter and Mare Halter. Janice’s deep faith in Our Lord and Savior was a constant and she sought to live her life in a way that reflected the love of Jesus. Anyone who knew Janice will remember her twinkling eyes, kind spirit and wise words. She was a long-standing member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas, and regularly attended Hill Country Bible Church in Cedar Park, Texas. Janice and Roger dearly loved their daughter, Cynda Wieland Bouse and her husband, Jake Bouse, son, Roger Vance Wieland and his wife, Deborah Ann Wieland, and 3 grandchildren Zachary Jacob Wieland, Laurel Ashliegh Wieland, and Christopher Vance Wieland, married to Olga Kazakova Wieland, and their great-granddaughter, Mischa Katarina Wieland. A Memorial Service Celebrating the Life of Janice will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at 3:00 PM in the Wildwood Chapel at Restland of Dallas. Donations may be made to the DCCCD (Dallas County Community College District) Foundation for the Janice Wieland Speech Communication Endowed Scholarship in memory of Janice Wieland.
