Janis Thompson's Obituary
Janis Erline Thompson, 87, of Garland, Texas passed into eternity on November 17, 2025. She spent her final months cared for and surrounded by her beloved family.
Janis grew up in Dalhart, Texas with her mother, twin sister, younger brother, and her father, whom she adored, until his death when she was 10 years old. After graduating from Dalhart High School, Janis worked at various jobs until she fulfilled her dream of going to college. She graduated Magnum Cum Laude in Accounting at Texas Tech University.
Janis loved traveling with her twin sister, Janet, and their combined children: Greg, Glen, Will, Byron, and Kim. She also enjoyed family vacations from her youth as well as family reunions at Red River. Other favorite vacations included cruises to the Caribbean with her son Greg and trips to San Francisco and Mexico with her husband Mort. Through the years, Janis loved visiting her grandchildren in California, Arizona, Tennessee, and Kansas.
Besides her family, her greatest joys included visiting with dear friends, making beautiful quilts, and concocting scrumptious desserts. She was accomplished at them all. In her later years,
she loved spending her mornings reading her Jesus Calling and other devotional books with a cup of coffee, orange juice, and toast layered with peanut butter and la Madeleine’s strawberry-rhubarb jam. This morning ritual gave a sense of peace to her day.
Janis is survived by her sons Greg Thompson; Glen Thompson and wife Teresa; Grandchildren Kyle Thompson and wife Sharon; Sara Eickenhorst and husband Danny; Matthew Thompson; and Quinn Thompson. Nephews, nieces, and in-laws are also counted among the treasured surviving family members. Janis is preceded in death by her dear husband of 46 years, Mort Thompson; her cherished son, William Thompson; her beloved granddaughter Hannah Thompson; her dear parents Jake Hagler and Margaret & Vernon Walker; and her adored siblings Janet Lindemann and Larry Hagler.
Janis had an enduring love for her family and friends. She delighted in meeting new people and cultivating old friendships. Although those who love her will miss her deeply, we have a hope that we will see her again. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 says, “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, at Restland Funeral Home’s Wildwood Chapel in Dallas at 10:30 am
